|
|
The dealer told me my 04 Disco's Front Drive shaft was wore out and needed replacing. $1200 or so, and that was for the same stock shaft that can't be lubed at the Cardan joint.
I had been meaning to replace the culprit with a Tom Woods shaft for some time, so I figured now was as good as any.
The process was super simple. Just measure the length of the shaft from flange to flange (mine was 24 3/4")and have that number ready when you call Tom Woods. 1-877-4x-woods or www.4xshaft.com
8 nuts later and the old shaft was on the ground. Simple.
$395 and 5 days later the new shaft arrived. Today I rolled under the Disco and 20min later using 2 x 14mm wrenches and a little nail polish the new Tom Woods shaft was installed. Nail polish you ask?? I used it to mark the nuts to show which ones were correctly tightened, since it could be easy to lose track while trying to spin the shaft around.
I did a 20 mile test drive on roads with speeds from 25-70 mph..... It was as smooth as when I bought the Disco. And now I have 4 lubrication points. Very nice, easy, and now Happy!!

i agree the Tom Woods is an impressive piece of work.
super burly.
but i just put my 2nd one on, and they both have wobbled at 75+ mph.
so, for someone who does a lot of highway miles (and drives over 70mph), I would recommend getting your stock shaft rebuilt instead of the TW. _________________ 04 D2 S

I have had several friends with TW shafts and I haven't heard a complaint about vibes with them. _________________ 1999 Discovery SD "Expedition White"

yeah, according to TW, it certainly doesn't affect all Discovery's, but on the other hand it isn't uncommon either. (this is what I gather from lurking on the web, too)
The reason for the vibration isn't clear as he spins the shafts at >3k rpm when balancing. _________________ 04 D2 S

I've got new front and rear TW's on my 04 DII. So far I've had them at 80+ with no issues. We're taking it to the beach for Turkey Day so I'll report back after that trip. _________________ Jeff Hibdon

All,
I've had this shaft on since the post. 10k miles later and still no vibes. I drive to and from Indianapolis and Arkansas at speeds up to 75-80mph. I do a lot of light wheeling in the "back 40" of Ft. Campbell with no issues there either. |

Thought I would chime in here. I have had two Tom Woods drive shafts and both have vibrated at about 75 mph. The first one was sent back and rebalanced and it lasted a year before failing (still don't know why it failed other than I didn't know to grease the center ball with that damned needle attatchment). I bought another one from him and it vibes right at 75 too but I figured it would make me slow down so I didn't bother with a rebalance. One day I am going to get them to rebuild the first and then I will keep the wobbly one for a spare. Hope this helps someone. _________________ 2001 Disco II SD7

So after 4 months I'm still liking my TW Shafts. I wouldn't say they are 100% vibe free, but I have no intention of returning or rebalancing them. I'd say it is very minor and I'm still not 100% sure it's not the used set of Wrangler HPs I've got on there. I had a front tire get out of round or become unbalanced. When I finally swapped it with the spare the majority of my vibe went away. _________________ Jeff Hibdon

It probably isn't the shafts that are giving you guys vibrations, it's the LT230. It's going to have vibrations with a heavy shaft(s) put on it after it's a few years old and has some miles on it. It's just the nature of the LT230, the outputs get loose and the heavy shaft will cause the vibrations...
If that's something that bothers you rebuild the front with u joints and centering ball kit you can grease and run a d1/rrc u jount to u joint rear... _________________ Will Peters - KJ4GIC
